Question 7:
Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
From the production of my preliminary task to my final film I feel that I have made vast improvements. First of all, I believe that I have used a wider range of camera angles and clips which in effect makes the whole opening sequence more visually appealing and can change the atmosphere entirely. In my preliminary task i found that I had a minimal variety of camera angles and the shots didn't flow efficiently into one another therefore made it look unprofessional and untidy and I also didn't understand how to use the equipment properly as we used the preliminary task as the 'getting to know' the equipment task. I also filmed each clip once therefore not giving me a variety of clips to choose from and leaving me stuck with ones which were not perfect. Whereas, in the construction process of my filming I filmed each clip numerous times so that I could choose the best one possible. I also used a master shot in my final product, a technique that was not used in the preliminary task.
In my preliminary task I followed the 180 degree rule which is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left\right relationship to each other, and helps the audience to follow a conversation correctly. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects it is called crossing the line. The new shot from the opposite side is known as a reverse angle.
I think the filming and editing in my preliminary task was very poor because in numerous clips I either started the filming too late or stopped it too early failing to include the whole conversation. In addition, the editing was rough because i didn't allow enough time for the in and out points within the clips, which culminated in a poorly edited conversation. However my preliminary task was very basic and my first experience of filming and editing.
In my final film there are a wide range of camera angles/shot types and my editing is also much more efficient and professional. I have used camera angles such as close-ups, median shots, long shots, and over the shoulder shots throughout my film to give the audience many different points of view. I have used tracking shots to show the abductors and witnesses point of views which engages the audience into the film. I have also used depth of field to emphasise some of the movements and make them more interesting such as when she is skipping down the side of the road and also to show the abductor trying to focus on her. Additionally i used lots of filler shots, for example close ups of the wheels, and different shots of my sister. I filmed each clip at least three times so that I wouldn't have to go out and film again if I had a clip which didn't work or wasn't smooth.
